Walking for Fitness

With Summer here, it seems an appropriate time to talk about walking for fitness. I wanted to talk about walking for several reasons, not the least of which being the health benefits that can come from it.

Walking for Fun and Fitness

According to an article I found by the Mayo Clinic, walking can produce the following benefits:
*It’s safe and easy (no practice needed)
*It’s low impact
*It can help put you in a better mood
*It can lower your LDL (or “lousy” cholesterol)
*It can help improve your HDL (or “happy” cholesterol)
*It can help lower blood pressure
*It can help you lose weight
*It can help reduce stress

Personally, walking would be worth it for the reduction in stress alone, but then, I have a pretty full household and it’s a great escape when I need a breather.

The Beauty of Walking

The beauty of walking is that you can do it just about anywhere without any major special equipment. All you need is a good, sturdy pair of walking shoes and appropriate clothing and you are set to go. You can also walk with friends and make it an outing. Walking with friends is actually a fantastic way to catch up on each other’s goings on, get some fresh air and exercise and it’s also a terrific way to measure your stride.

When you are walking for fitness, you should be slightly breathless but not completely out of breath and still able to carry on a conversation. When you hit that point, you know you are walking at a good pace that will not only help burn calories but increase the other health benefits as well.

Walking Clubs

If you look for excuses to do things with your friends because there’s not enough time in the day (believe me, I am so there with you) then start a walking club. It’s a great reason to get together and you can even bring your kids with you if they’re still at home. Our moms group at church goes to different Parks throughout the summer with the kids. Walking through some of the gardens is not only beautiful but refreshing and fun too. Everybody needs some beauty to look at.

If you’re working then form a group that can walk at lunch. Even 15 or 20 minutes of walking every day can be good for you. (Help you detox after your boss drives you crazy all morning!) If you want to walk and don’t know where to start, find a good personal trainer to help you with your fitness plan. That way, you can start your own walking for fun and fitness. Make strides!!

Senior Depression – Mental Health Services in Long-Term Care Facilities

For seniors who live independently, mental health is largely dependent on their capacity for self awareness and their willingness to seek appropriate care. For those living in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities, the situation is a little more tenuous. As the numbers show, depressive and behavioral disorders are prevalent in these settings. In addition to the usual stresses associated with aging, such as loss of loved ones, physical deterioration, and fears related to death, seniors in long-term care facilities often struggle with increased isolation and debilitating physical ailments, which can exacerbate latent mental issues. Since residents of senior facilities are often in poor health and have decreased cognitive functioning, it`s not always easy to evaluate and treat these individuals. How Medicare Helps Seniors with Depression The Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 stipulated screenings for mental illness and the reduced use of physical and chemical restraints. As part of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA), this law mandated some pivotal changes in nursing home care, emphasizing quality of life. In 1990, Congress responded by revising the Medicare laws, specifying beneficiaries will receive mental health care, if needed. Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover blanket screening procedures. This renders it virtually impossible to uncover hidden symptoms that residents sometimes hide to avoid stress and shame. In 2002, however, Medicare recognized the value of psychological services coinciding with the management of medical conditions. I translate this as such: if you’re already physically very ill, your mental health is important. If depression or mental illness is detected, and a doctor refers the resident to a psychiatrist, Medicare will cover 50 percent of the approved amount. This is a hefty co-payment, especially in relation to the 80 percent Medicare covers for doctor;s office visits. I think it;s safe to say navigating through the Medicare system can be a little confusing. Treating Depression in Long-term Care Facilities Several organizations have emerged to bridge the gap between mental health and long term care. VeriCare, for example, partners with skilled nursing and other residential facilities to create programs tailored to their residents; needs. This company, founded shortly after the Nursing Home Reform Act, improves compliance with OBRA standards and provides behavioral and mental health services unavailable in most long-term care settings. In searching for a long-term care facility, a process Gilbert Guide simplifies, it may be wise to inquire as to what mental health systems they have in place. With over 50 percent of nursing home residents exhibiting signs of depression and under 5 percent of those individuals receiving treatment, it;s crucial to plan ahead. I certainly wouldn’t choose a home for my grandmother if her physical health might be jeopardized. I;m even more hesitant to choose a place that doesn’t recognize her mental well being as equally important.

Water Enemies” – How Do We Identify Them?

There are many purification devices designed for home use, but certain brands are problematic.  The problems with pure water filtration devices is that they do not remove THMs, VOCs, alachlor, and benzene, TCE or MTBE.  Let’s take a brief look at these water enemies many of which are said to cause cancer.

#1 THMs

THMs are trihalomethanes. They are produced when treatment facilities use chlorine to kill bacteria and keep the pipes free of algae.  They are known to cause cancer in humans. 

#2 VOCs

VOCs are volatile organic compounds.  There are thousands of different compounds that fall under this category.  Some cause cancer.  One has been making US news lately, because there is no EPA limit on how much can be present in drinking water.  Ingesting the VOC causes dysfunction of the thyroid gland, growth problems and metabolic disorders.

#3-6Alachlor-Benzene-TCE-MTBE – Are These Cancer Causing Agents?

Alachlor is a cancer causing herbicide that is still commonly used in the US, even though it has been banned in the EU.  Benzene and TCE are also known carcinogens.  MTBE is only “possibly” carcinogenic.  All of these are common contaminants.  Facilities are not required to test for all of them.  So, you don’t know if they are there or not.

Ultra pure water for drinking should not contain cancer causing chemicals and compounds that damage your health.  Those are the problems with pure water filtering systems for the home.  There is no real purity.

#7 Plastic – What is the Danger?

How about ultra pure water sold in a plastic bottle?  The problems with pure water stored in a plastic bottle have to do with the compounds used to make the bottle.  The most common ones are BPA and phthalates. 

Researchers are still debating the health problems caused by these compounds, but they do know that anything stored in containers that they were used to produce become contaminated.  CDC studies found some level of BPA in over 90% of people tested.

Another of the pure pure water problems in a bottle is that companies are not required to use a purification device, at all.  They may sell tap-water.  It’s their choice.  All the FDA has to say is that it be “as good as” what is already coming out of your tap.

Some people think of ultra pure water as distilled.  Distillation is commonly used by companies that sell bottled waters.  The process de-mineralizes water.  That’s great for semi-conductors and electrical appliances, but not for the human body.  It’s not even good for fish.

You hear it every day on television and radio. People are overweight. Do they think that is news? All a person needs do is look around them or perhaps in the mirror to know that. The real news about the overweight situation facing all of us is what to do about it.

We all know that lifestyle and temptations are a large part of the problem. It seems like we are all rushing around, grabbing some fast calorie laden food on the run, whether we are hungry or not. We gobble it down without knowing what we ate and we are off again.

A trip to the grocery store is a real source of temptation. Snacks and all kind of saliva invoking goodies abound. No matter how we try the old will power is going to take a beating here.

The combination of these things has caused many people to become a victim of eating addiction. The problem with this addiction is that we don’t recognize it as we would a drug or alcohol addiction. That is what makes this condition more difficult to treat than other forms of addiction. Of course if you are addicted to something, you should stay completely away from it. The problem is, you can’t stay away from food.

Mindfulness is healing for not only physical illness, chronic pain, but also anxiety and everyday stress.

Contemporary living is hectic and stressful. This is mainly because we focus too much on the “self.” In our lives, everything seems to evolve around the “self”: the errands we have to run, the goals we have to achieve, and the deadlines we have to meet. Such demands have evolved into our everyday stress.

Because we focus too much on the “self,” we have become oblivious to the needs of others: in other words, we lack mindfulness. In addition, due to our ingrained “mine-is-better” attitude, we often create conflicts in our everyday encounters with people. This is another major source of everyday stress.

How does mindfulness reduce everyday stress?

Researchers have found that mindfulness – in particular, mindfulness meditation – promotes a state of relaxation through changing the brain chemistry. Thus, mindfulness can heal depression. In addition, research has indicated that mindfulness can enhance the immune system, and thus vindicating the healing power of mindfulness.

What exactly is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a deliberate act of focusing the mind on the present moment.

Many of us are living in the past, the present, and the future simultaneously. The past affects our present as well as the future. To illustrate, an unpleasant past experience, such as a bad financial decision or investment, may play a pivotal role in our decision in the present by creating a setting for anxiety and worry, and accordingly with profound implications on the future.

Mindfulness brings our minds to what is happening at this very present moment, to the exclusion of everything else in the past or in the future. It is this “concentrated” relaxation through mindfulness that we can reduce, if not eradicate, everyday stress.

As mentioned above, we are living in a high-wired society in which multitasks are performed concurrently. A simple illustration is a driver talking on the cell phone, listening to the radio, while driving. We are on a fast lane, which is full of distractions and interruptions. Mindfulness is an inconspicuous sign on that fast lane, and it is small wonder that many of us miss that sign. As a result, we often take a turn into the lane leading to stress and distress.

In life, at the ordinary moment of the present, we often miss what is extraordinary at that moment. This “extraordinary” experience, such as rich sensory experiences that touch the nethermost of our souls, is felt only through mindfulness. How often do we eat while we watch a football game. Our focus is on the game, not really on the taste of the food. Mindfulness is savoring the food we eat, pondering on how it affects our senses as well as our health. Mindfulness is focusing on the ordinary that we often take for granted.

Lao Tzu, the great ancient Chinese philosopher, once said: “To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.” Because of all the hustle and bustle around us, we do not experience that “stillness” that Lao Tzu described. For this reason, we tend to feel that the whole world is against us. What we really need is self-reflection and depth of understanding of what we are doing at the present moment. Let mindfulness reduce your everyday stress in a stressful world.

Why Does Health News Sound So Unhealthy?

When researchers at Ohio State University calculated the body mass index of 8,550 Asian, black, Hispanic, Native American and white 4-year-olds born in 2001 and 2005, 18.4% were obese. The difference in percentages between racial/ethnic groups ranged from 31.2% of American Indian/Native Alaskan 4-year-olds to 12.8% of Asian 4-year-olds. The difference in percentages was attributed to lifestyle differences both culturally and socioeconomically. Children obese at age 4 can have high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. “The heavier you are as a child, the likelier that extra weight will follow you through life” is a quote not to be taken lightly.

Also not to be taken lightly is an experimental program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, which helps pregnant women control their weight. The program is based on new research showing excessive weight gain during pregnancy hurts both mother and fetus. It increases risk of complications during pregnancy and puts children at risk for obesity and diabetes later in life. Animal studies have shown the environment in which fetuses grow influences genes and children can be imprinted with a vulnerability to be overweight. Because nearly one-quarter of the 4 million U.S. births annually involve obese women, further research can’t “weight”.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, food labels can state zero grams of trans fats if the trans fats are less than .49 grams. To avoid even trace amounts of these harmful fats, avoid foods with partially hydrogenated oils – which are trans fats. Manufacturers use these oils to add shelf life to products. Trans fats can raise triglycerides and LDL and lower HDL, increasing risk of heart disease. LDL starts going up when 3.8% of caloric intake is trans fats. In a 2000 calorie diet, that’s 8 grams. The process of maintaining good health is avoiding trans-fat-containing, processed foods.

Helping to maintain good health, a federal study of 545,000 AARP members – which took into account other risk factors like smoking and family histories of cancer and obesity – found eating large amounts of red meat increases the likelihood of dying from heart disease and cancer. People who eat the highest amounts of red and processed meats are about 20% more likely to die of cancer. Heavy consumption of red meat also increases the risk of death due to heart disease 27% for men and 50% for women. Now the FDA is getting down to the meat of the matter.
